Descrição:

The cornerstone for Trinity Episcopal Church was placed in 1891, although the church began operating as a Sunday School for boys in 1884. In 1886, the church was dedicated and operating as a Mission in union with the Episcopal Diocese of Maine. Outreach has long been part of Trinity’s mission. The church celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2016.

Trinity has had a newsletter for many decades. For the last six years, Trinity’s Herald has added news from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and the newsletter has become the Herald/KeyNotes. Trinity’s rector serves as priest-in-charge at St. Peter’s . The newsletter is published eleven times a year by a Trinity parishioner.

The Rev. Elizabeth Lameyer Gilmore (Trinity rector- 1990-2000) initiated a needlepoint project at Trinity that resulted in the addition of two dozen works of art that grace the sanctuary. When then-Bishop, the Rt. Reverend Chilton Knudsen was coming for a Trinity Homecoming and the blessing of all of the kneelers and seat cushions, a special booklet which describes each of the pieces was completed as a souvenir of the occasion.

The late Jennifer Fyles painted two spectacular murals of Back Cove, one quite dark and the other bright. “Out of the darkness and into the light.” As Trinity sits very near Back Cove in Portland, these murals are a source of beauty on the stone wall behind the altar and they are treasured by all.

The Hutchins Memorial Sign was a gift to Trinity in 2015 from the children of the late Rev. Gordan Hutchins who served Trinity as our beloved Assisting Priest for many years. Trinity is located on Portland’s busy Forest Avenue so the new sign offers increased visibility for church events, a valued and welcome addition.

Trinity Day School, the brainchild of a former Trinity rector, John Woolverton, was founded in 1985. This bustling community of nearly fifty children, aged six weeks to five years old, is housed in the church undercroft.

Jennie Fyles, a gifted painter and member of Trinity, now deceased, painted these two Easter paintings. What is so unusual about them is that they are painted with gold leaf and real ashes made from burnt palms. They are hung in the sanctuary during the Easter season.

On Ash Wednesday, February 13, 2013, Lawrence B. Weeks, rector of Trinity Episcopal in Portland( 2002-2020), introduced “Ashes To Go” in Portland, a program that had been tried elsewhere with success. Taking the imposition of ashes to the street–– literally, the program is an ongoing and welcomed outreach to the community.

We have a wonderful series of programs called The Butterfield Series, named for a past senior warden who died at age 47. The Butterfield Series has had an astronaut fresh off the Space Station, Maine’s Poet Laureate Richard Blanco, a famous Maine author and many other illustrious speakers since the program’s inception
