This act caused a lot of animosity between the states and the federal government. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 ended public segregation and prohibited employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or nation origin. The southern states who adopted Jim Crow laws felt that this was unfair to them. This is similar to the federal government trying to abolish slavery. The southern states questioned what authority the national gov't had to tell them they couldn't segregate. The states themselves wanted to be able to decide whether it was legal in their states. The states believed only they should have the right to make a decision like that for themselves and the federal gov't believed they had the right to make such a law as it was for the betterment of the country. It was states vs federal gov't again and the federal gov't won.
