The Italian front is opened with the first battle of The Isonzo. The Italians sought to force Austro-Hungary to abandon defensive positions along the Isonzo river. Despite having a 2-1 numbers advantage the Italian attack failed due to the commander ordering frontal assaults and the Austro-Hungarians having very good defenses, being uphill and having barbed wire stationed. The Italians suffered around 15 thousand casualties to the Austro-Hungarian's 10 thousand
