The first major conflict involving the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) The Battle of Mons was fought on the French border. Although the British fought well and inflicted a good number of casualties; they were forced to retreat facing the numerically superior Germans and the sudden retreat of the French 5th army, which left their right flank open.
