The French 2nd army advanced on the German 6th army in an attempt to take the Lorraine. After some back and forth fighting the German army started to retreat. The French army pursued, but that caused them to split from their reinforcements. The German army turned around and faced the now divided French army, forced them retreat while taking heavy casualties.
