Also called the “Age of Reason”, this was a move from 1685 to 1815 during which philosophy, social sciences, and politics were revolutionarily reformed. As scientific, logical thinking began to evolve, people began to apply more reasoned thinking to everyday life. This led to two things: the questioning of traditional authority and the use of science to understand more worldly characteristics. It began in the late 1600’s with the ideas of men like Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Francis Bacon, Galileo, and Isaac Newton. The men published ideas on human nature, science, and math. Later, in the early 1700s, French philosophers like Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Rousseau published important ideas like rational thought of the universe and what was moral when it came to ruling people. Later colonial figures like Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson would draw heavily upon the ideas of the philosophers in their writing, like the Declaration of Independence, which used terms directly from John Locke. The thoughts of independence, self governing, democracy, and collective will are part of what led the colonists to believe their actions were just.
