Defined: Dred Scott, a slave who lived with his owner in a free state before returning to Missouri with his owner, argued in court that living in a free state should have emancipated him. However, it was decided that African Americans, free or slave, were not considered as citizens of the US, and could not sue in court; caucasian Americans could abuse African Americans due to their lack of power. Slaves were also considered as property, which many Northerners thought as inhumane.
