6 mar 1857 ano - Dred Scott v. Sanford
Descrição:
Key Event: The Dred Scott v. Sandford decision is a key event because it contributes to the tensions between the North and south, leading to Abraham’s election and the Civil War.
Defined: Dred Scott, a slave who lived with his owner in a free state before returning to Missouri with his owner, argued in court that living in a free state should have emancipated him. However, it was decided that African Americans, free or slave, were not considered as citizens of the US, and could not sue in court; caucasian Americans could abuse African Americans due to their lack of power. Slaves were also considered as property, which many Northerners thought as inhumane.
Described: Free states began to outnumber the slave states, and many abolitionists were gaining political strength. Inspired by the abolitionist movement, Dred Scott decided he would fight for his freedom. Before Dred Scott went to court, he had lived in a free state above the 3630 degree latitude line while the Missouri Compromise was not repealed yet.
Short Term: Many abolitionists felt defeated. Southerners saw the case as an important precedent for future cases because it had given them a legal upper-hand over African Americans.
Long Term: The results of the court case furthered tensions, between the north and south, contributing to Abraham Lincoln’s election and the Civil War.
