By this time the only English presence in Ireland was that of the Pale - a small stretch of land on the East Coast that was overseen by a Lord Deputy. The rest of the country was ruled by either native Gaelic chiefs who had regained their land following the Black Death, or Anglo-Gaelic lords who had descended from the Normans and now occupied their own small territories.
Over the years tensions had arisen between the English monarchy and the Lord Deputies of the Pale over the fact that England had separated from the Catholic Church. Eventually, this lead to Deputy Thomas FitzGerald renouncing his allegiance to the King in June 1534. He was executed three years later and Henry then proposed an agreement to all the lords and chiefs in Ireland. The King offered Royal protection to all the high officials in turn for surrendering their land to the Crown and following English law. In 1541 this proposal was accepted and thus the Kingdom of Ireland was established.
The various rulers continued to govern their territories as before but over the next few decades this would slowly be squashed by English authorities eventually bringing Ireland under control.
