By this time, Rome had subjugated the Greek colony of Massalia in Southeast Gaul, but now one particular Roman general named Julius Caesar decided to take the entire land of Gaul itself in 58 BCE. Caesar allied himself with some of the clans under the pretense of helping them fend off a migrating people called the Helvetii from what-is-now Switzerland. Using this, the Romans managed to invade the majority of Gaul and conquer each clan one at a time using the military might of the other clans.
On seeing this, one Gallic leader called Vercingetorix attempted to unify all the tribes and clans against the Roman invasion which lead to the 8-year-long Gallic Wars. During this time Caesar attempted to take Britain as well and even breached the southern coast, but due to the winter weather and the battles in Gaul, he left and never returned. These wars ended in a victory for the Roman Republic.
It is estimated that a million Gauls died and a million more were enslaved. The rest of the population lived out their lives under Roman occupation.
