"In the summer of 1916, John Patterson, an affable man, invited the new Mountie home for supper, and there he met Jessie, a willowy sixteen-year-old with a lovely high-cheekboned face and thick brown hair" (25).

The start of all troubles: the first event leading to Polly's death. If John had never met Jessie, it's possible that his feelings for Polly would've continued.
John meets Jessie Patterson, a beautiful 16 year old girl he just can't resist.
In pursuit of a love with her, John completely abandons his wife. First, he tells the Pattersons Polly is dead, and then he says that she was completely crazy and had to move to Canada to get away from her.
John is betraying the family he left behind in the hopes that he can win over this new girl he's lusting for.
