After a four-day trial, which started on July 20, 1885, Riel was found guilty of treason. Initially, his trial was to be in Winnipeg, which at the time had a high Metis population but was moved to Regina and his jury consisted of only English-speaking Protestants. He was recommended mercy. Riel had the chance to get his sentence removed if he played an appeal to the federal government. In the end, Macdonald and his cabinet decided to hang Riel. He was executed on November 16, 1885
Riel's execution was a topic of controversy during the weeks following his death. In Quebec, the politicians stirred up the anger of the French and Catholic population over Riel's sentence. Crowds gathered to protest to the actions of Macdonald and his cabinet. The anger of the French Canadians was internationally recognized and even to this day, the decision to execute Riel is controversial.
