In May 1955 according to a Ghanaian White Paper published four years later, some Togoland Congress members prepared a plan to reunite Togoland by violence. After the party's leaders failed to dissuade the General Assembly from approving the integration of British Togoland, military training camps were hastily established in the "bush," but were discovered by police. Three companies of the Ghana Regiment were sent to the trust territory before independence.94 Apparently the plotters hoped, by disrupting orderly government through attacks on offices, installations, and forces, to attract the attention of the United Nations and hereby bring about a repeal of the resolution for union. In one serious incident, five police officers were injured by shotgun wounds and three of the assailants killed. The presence of armed troops may have prevented further incidents from occurring.
