The Soviet Union and the United States were both in a haste to gain nuclear weapons. In 1952, the US had tested its first Hydrogen bomb. Each superpower had stockpiled armed planes, submarines, and missiles with nuclear warheads powerful enough to destroy each other. Mutually assured destruction prevented either country from using any against each other.
