Officially passed by congress on this date, the declaration came from a number of reasons. U.S trade with the allies, unrestricted submarine warfare, the Zimmerman telegram, and U.S loans to the allies were all motivators of the declaration. America would find itself at war with Germany for the next 18 months, and ultimately win.
