The Canadian government established residential schools designed to assimilate First Nation children. These institutions were run by religious groups, including Anglican, Catholic, Presbyterian and United churches. Children as young as 4 years old were taken from their homes and sent to live at these schools. Students were forced to speak or learn English and French and were forbidden from practicing their own cultures.
While in 1891 there were 4, 126 children at residential schools and by 1914 there were 11, 714 children, in 1884 only 27 students attended the three existing residential schools as many families resisted the government's early efforts of taking the children. During the early 1900s, First Nation families tried to resist some residential school policies. In 1902, some First Nation chiefs were able to get residential school officials to agree not to baptize young children with out their parent's consent. The First Nations also opposed the fact that they were unable to see or visit their children. Most schools did not respect or cooperate with the children's families.
Despite resistance from the families of the students. the government continued to open more schools. Conditions grew increasingly worse in the 1920s. Some students were stripped of their birth names and were replaced with numbers. Teachers abused and punished children severely. Kids were malnourished, not allowed to speak their own language and were isolated from their families and communities. During the early 1900s, many students died from illness, abuse, suicide, and while running away from the schools. Families continued to protest but were ignored.
The last Residential School closed in 1996 and an official apology was made by the federal government in 2008.
