In the Battle of Kepaniwai, Kamehameha won a decisive victory against the Maui chiefs. Although Kamehameha defeated the Maui troops, he didn't kill any of its major chiefs and Maui chief Kahekili refused to relinquish control of Maui to him. After this one of the chiefess, Kalola, accepted Kamehameha's protection and promised to give her granddaughter, Keopuolani, as his future wife.
