Canadian government establishes residential schools, designed to assimilate and educate Frist Nations children. The institutions were run by religious groups, including Anglican Catholic, Presbyterian, and United churches. Children as young as 4 years old were taken from homes and sent to live in the schools away from their family, forced to Catholic practices.
