25 nov 1956 ano - American Cancer Society announces that there is a direct link between cigarettes and lung cancer

Descrição:

If you look at black and white photos from somewhere in the 20th century, you will most likely see someone or some people in the picture smoking cigarettes. In the early to mid-20th century, there was not nearly as much concern around cigarettes and the major harm that it can and will cause you. After extensive research, however, the American Cancer Society discovered that there are very unpleasant chronic effects of smoking cigarettes, one of them being lung cancer. Ever since this announcement and further studies, the number of people who smoked in America began to decrease over time. Discoveries like this eventually lead to much bigger things, like how if you read a magazine and you see a cigarette advertisement, there is a big "general's warning" that states the risks of smoking cigarettes. Before this and many other discoveries, the warnings that people heard about smoking seemed either negligible or the people just did not care.

Cigarettes were and still are big money-makers, but back in the 1950s, there a lot more people smoking than the number of people that smoke today. After the soldiers from WWII were returning home and causing people to move to the suburbs, the baby boom, and to start new lives, people began to smoke cigarettes because they wanted something new to do to relax, which caused a lot more people to buy cigarettes at the time, which contributed to the mass amount of consumption that people were doing in the 1950s.
