The election was Bush vs Gore
Bush was the Republican candidate and Gore was the Democrat candidate
Gore won the popular vote but they still had to wait for the electoral college vote
Bush had won the electoral college vote for Florida, but it was a close percentage to Gore that the state law required a recount
Bush won the electoral college vote by one more than the majority

The importance of this event is that it was the closest presidential race in decades that the supreme court had to decide who won.
It was the 4th time in American history that the winner lost the popular vote but won the electoral college vote.
