A rushed response by the US to the launching of both Sputniks. Its goal was to launch a grapefruit sized satallite into space to demonstrate the US's technological advances. Was aired nationally on live TV in December but crashed after only a few feet of movement. The public failure would cause the rise of war between US and USSR over space travel. The failure of this project caused Eisenhower to establish NASA
