The terrorist group Al Quaeda hijacked 4 commercial jet liners and crashed them into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, the White House (although the passengers staged a successful revolt on the aircraft heading to the white house and so it didn't actually hit the white house). In response to this, President Bush announces that the United States was going to wage a war on terror around the world, not only against the terrorist groups themselves but the countries that harbored them. It is at this point that the U.S. seriously commits to being a global police force. (Continuity: U.S. acts as a global police force) (Effect: countries would be attacked by the U.S. for harboring terrorists)
