Friedan’s book was revolutionary and helped spark the second-wave feminism of the 1960s and 1970s. It brought attention to the discontent and dissatisfaction of women who were simply housewives and did not have formal employment. The same year, Congress passed the Equal Pay Act, which required both women and men to receive the same pay for doing the same job. Although this was never quite adequately enforced, it was a major step in the right direction from the perspective of feminists and women’s rights advocates.
