Harlem became a cultural hub for the African American community in the North. During the Harlem Renaissance, literature and art flourished and helped expose the rest of the American population to African American ideas and culture. Hurston’s novel Their Eyes Were Watching God and Hughes’ various poems such as “The Negro Speaks of Rivers” were particularly influential.
