The Central Pacific Company, as a response to a severe shortage of labor begins hiring Chinese to build the transcontinental railroad, a massive building project to create a railroad that would connect the American East and West together. They took advantage of cheap Chinese labor in California, hiring over 2500 Chinese Americans to perform the backbreaking and dangerous work that would be required to build the railroad.
