Intelligence agents were popularized in the mid 1990's, after Judea Pearl, Allen Newell, Leslie P. Kaelbling, along with others brought concepts such as decision theory, and economics into the field of AI. Intelligent agents are autonomous entities which observe through sensors and act upon an environment using actuators and directs its activity towards achieving goals. Intelligence agents may also learn or use knowledge to achieve their goals.
