22 out 999 ano - Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz, Toledo
Descrição:
A former mosque situated above the northern ramparts of Toledo, Spain. Built in 999 AD. One of the oldest Moorish monuments in Spain. The square part of the building is original to the 10th century mosque. It is about 8m x 8m in plan. Pillars and horseshoe arches divide the space into 3 aisles crossed by another three, forming nine small compartments. These are topped with square vaults, each with a unique geometrical design. An apse was added later when the mosque was converted to a Christian church. This addition was considered one of the first buildings in the Mudejar* style.
*Mudejar is an architectural and decorative style which developed in Spain after the Christian reconquest. It was influenced by Moorish workmanship and patterning.
