No longer were Native Americans treated as sovereign nations but rather as individuals. Additionally, Native Americans were designated wards of the US government, an arrangement that would lead to their disenfranchisement in monetary transactions and under state laws. It also ended the ability of tribes to negotiate treaties with the federal government.
