1 jan 1813 ano - 1813 - The Waltham-Lowell factory was an early factory to make use of female labor. The Lowell system involved bringing previously agricultural women from the countryside surrounding the factory to do menial tasks. The workers were required to live on the factory grounds, and were also required to ascribe to certain moral standards.
