During the spring of 1989, hundreds of thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators occupied Tiananmen square. Their goal was to end corruption of the ruling party, a greater say in government, and to have the universities get better living conditions.
Many went of hunger strike and ignored the governments request for them to leave. In early June, tanks and armed troops began to move inward towards Tiananmen square. People were shot on the streets. Hundreds were killed and thousands were injured. This was known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
Afterward. Western nations cut back or reduced loans to China. Tourist would refuse to visit, and China was in need of new income to replace the money from other countries.
