Mao Zedong died in 1976. The gang of four emerged where they wanted to continue the culture revolution. The gang of four were arrested and sent for life sentences. By 1970 Deng Xiaoping became the leader of the moderates. He made a plan to improve agriculture, industry science and technology, and national defence. He also started to trade with the west.
