Tang elites were beginning to dislike Buddhism because it encouraged women to be involved in politics and it undermined Confucianist ideals. Wu Zhao was a self-proclaimed bodhisattva (enlightened soul that remined on Earth to guide others). She married into the imperial family and managed to take control of the empire.
