After stealing money from his brother in law, John Wilson is no longer as accepted as he used to be in his small town.
He came to be known as a crooked thief by everyone except his wife.
He leaves to Canada in search of land and work, and Saskatoon seems to be the perfect place for that.
The city was known as the "Fastest Growing City in the World". It promised land and jobs for cheap price. John believed that this would be the perfect place to start his new beginning.
This event is significant because it is the start of a new life without his family. This is the start of John's second life, one where he wants nothing to do with Polly or his kids. He grows to resent his Scotland family to the point where he kills his wife.
