The rise of Communism marked an opposing trend to that of the nationalists in Germany, Italy, and Japan. Socialist movement were more centered around the rights of the people to govern themselves, and often took these ideas to the extreme. Communist parties often opposed fascist parties but were usually forced out after fascists took power. Stalin's control of Russia led to the first major Communist state in the world.
