After only having been in the League for 7 years (joined late in 1929), Hitler sent a short letter to the secretary-general of the League of Nations, Joseph Avenol, announcing Germany's departure from what was supposed to be a combined organization of European nations. This event is very significant in the path to World War II, because it showed to the world that Germany did not have cooperative intentions.
