u.s decision-makers decide to drop the nuclear bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima as an alternative to a mainland invasion. The planned invasion was supposed to cost 100,000 American troops, not to mention far more civilians and Japanese soldiers that who died in the blast. This event is significant because it began the Cold War arms race and also marked the first time in history when a nuclear weapon was used.
