Dred Scott was a slave whose master died while in a free state, and he should have been entitled to his freedom. To pursue his freedom, he sued the government, but the supreme court decided that slaves are property, no matter where they are. This killed the Missouri compromise, and caused great doubt in the Judicial branch.
