The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was set up as a military alliance beyond the Treaty of Brussels. It introduced the USA and Canada as well as other European Countries: Denmark, Italy, Norway, Portugal and Iceland and they would support one another in defence and security and help stop the spread of communism.
An attack on one was considered an attack on all and members would co-ordinate military action.
They agreed to increase military spending and the USA funded additionally and gained military bases in Europe.
Nuclear weapons held by the US, Britain (1952) and France (1960)
