In the 1990s there was another resurgence in music due to genres such as hard rock, grunge, Britpop and later pop-punk. I like to think that this resurgence was helped by the public release of the .mp3 file format. When .mp3 was released in 1993 in MPEG-1 Audio Layer III format the files were only available in bit rates of 32 – 320 (plenty to choose from), this was later improved due to technological breakthroughs when MPEG-2 Audio Layer III was released in 1995 and included the missing 8, 16 and 24 bit rates.
