Tsar Nicholas II wrote a letter to the Grand Duke about him taking over. His letter had thanked Nikolai for serving as the Commander-in-Chief. He had also said the he had now time to take day to day control of the Russian Army. His decision to take control was made virtually unanimous cabinet opposition. It had feared that any setbacks or bad things the army suffered would be directly reflected upon himself.
