Hernan Cortes was a Spanish explorer who defeated the Aztec empire and claimed Mexico for Spain. He came from a lesser noble family in Spain and he left Spain to seek his fortune in the New World. He later joined an expedition of Cuba led by Diego Velazquez. In 1518, Cortes was to command his own expedition to Mexico but it was cancelled. Cortes ignored the command and sailed to Mexico with over 500 men and 11 ships that year. He reached the Mexican coast in February of 1519. Cortes allied with some of the native people he encountered. He fought Tlaxacan and Cholula warriors then had plans to take over the Aztec empire. He marched to the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan and took the ruler Montezuma II hostage as his soldiers raided the city. The Aztecs drove Cortes out of the city but not for long as he returned to take the city in 1521.
