Beginning in 1648 in France, the centralizing ideas of Cardinals Richelieu and Mazarin provoked a series of rebellions, called the Fronde, against the French royal authority. Although unsuccessful, the rebellions convinced Louis XIV that heavy-handed policies could endanger the royal authority.
