The treaty of Westphalia, signed in 1648, ended all hostilities of the 30 year’s war between France, Sweden, the Dutch Republic and the HRE. The Treaty of Westphalia established that the leader of a land determined its inhabitants’ religion, however the also gave the Calvinists their long-sought legal recognition, which was opposed by the Pope.
