The colony of Massachusetts Bay (shown in purple) was founded by the Massachusetts Bay Company, founded in 1629. It was developed as a safe haven for Puritans, a religious group who believed that everyone was born saved or damned. They also disliked the control of the Pope, which the called "popery." By the turn of the century, the colony would have more residents than those of the Chesapeake or the West Indies.
