This battle was considered one of the most important battles in the Civil War. After major victories over the Union, General Robert E. Lee led his troops into Pennsylvania. During this time Lincoln was campaigning for his second term, had the confederates invaded the Union then Lincoln would appear as a poor president. Lee's attack eventually failed and he retreated back into Confederate lines.
