Jefferson Davis was elected President of the Confederate States of America in February 1861. As an advocate for slavery, he supported the south's decision to secede and was therefore elected by the south to be their leader. This issue of slavery is what would lead to the civil war and his disagreement with Abraham Lincoln, who was President of the Union.
