The Union had several advantages over the South in this long and grueling war.
- Larger population and number of soldiers
- Large industry sector and ability to make war materials including weapons
- New recruitment from eager former slaves
- Navy to blockade the South
- Pre-existing government and experience
- Better technology like telegrams
- The "better" ideology of abolition (more support even internationally)

Northern advantages mainly kick in when Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation, which wins many Northerners' support back for the war and renews morale. Also, key battles like Vicksburg and Gettysburg prove that the side with more men and industry will win. But equally important, background advantages like a pre-existing government and better technology will affect the Union victory also. Thus, the tide turns in 1863.
