Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés became the first Erupoean to discover a major Native American civilization. He happens upon Tenochtitlán, the capital of the Aztec empire. Though the Aztecs were easily the most powerful and fearsome people in the area, Cortés would quickly conqyer the city with the help of Native American allies and smallpox.
