The eastern front of the war was an area of weakness for the Union due to the consecutive victories for Lee's forces. Thus, this battle is important because it changes the tide of the Eastern front battles in the Union's favor. At Gettysburg (Pennsylvania) General Meade of the Union repels a Confederate attack and thus forces another invasion attempt to retreat back into Virginia- thus strengthening the North in the eastern theater.
