Grant was among the most effective Union Generals, leading a number of victories, including the victory at Vicksburg. By capturing the Confederate stronghold, the Union took control of the Mississippi, splitting the South in half on both sides of the river. His success brought massive popularity, eventually leading him to the presidency.
