The programming language Java was initially created in 1991 by James Gosling, Mike Sheridan, and Patrick Naughton, but it was first released in 1996.

When Java was created, the creators had 5 main goals for the language:

1. It had to be simple, object-oriented, and familiar.
2. It had to be robust and secure.
3. It had to be architecture-neutral and portable.
4. It had to execute with high performance.
5. it had to be interpreted, threaded, and dynamic.
